Leadership Communication Coaching

Leadership communication coaching helps managers be clear, be heard and listen well: framing messages for senior audiences, explaining decisions to teams, and adapting across cultures and languages. We work on your real material, from an upcoming board paper to a tense team meeting. I coach one to one, online or in person in Manama, in English and Arabic.

Rula Husseini explaining a point during a coaching session

Most communication problems in leadership are not about vocabulary. They come from unclear thinking, from assuming the audience needs what you need, or from listening only long enough to reply.

Communication gaps managers tend to notice too late

  • Your updates to senior leaders get cut short with “so what do you need from us?”
  • You explained a change carefully, yet the team heard something else entirely.
  • You are described as too detailed, too blunt, too soft or hard to read.
  • Meetings you run produce discussion but not decisions.
  • Written messages create more questions than they answer.
  • You lead people from many nationalities and wonder whether your message lands the same way with all of them.

Different audiences need the message framed differently

A common pattern is telling every audience the story in the order you lived it. Effective leaders start from what each listener needs to know, decide or do.

AudienceWhat they need firstCommon mistake
Board or executive committeeThe decision required, the risk and your recommendationLeading with background and methodology
Your own teamWhat is changing, why, and what it means for themAnnouncing the what without the why
Peers in other functionsShared interest and what you are asking of themAssuming goodwill will do the persuading
Multicultural or multilingual teamsExplicit expectations and room to ask questionsTaking silence for agreement

Listening is the half of communication leaders practise least

Senior people are often rewarded for answers, so they listen to find the gap where they can speak. In coaching, I model a different kind of listening, and we work on bringing it into your own conversations.

When your team feels properly heard, they bring you problems earlier and push back more honestly. That changes the quality of every decision you make. My article on active listening for leaders sets out the practical habits involved.

Sessions use your real messages, not invented exercises

Bring what you actually need to communicate: a presentation, a difficult email, a restructuring announcement, a proposal for a sceptical director. We work on the thinking behind it first, then the framing, then the delivery.

Where useful, you rehearse it aloud with me and we look at how it lands. If the message involves bad news, my guide on how to communicate a difficult decision is a helpful companion.

A first session begins with how others describe you

We start with any feedback you have received about your communication, formal or informal, and compare it with how you see yourself. Then we choose one important audience and look at a recent exchange with them in detail.

Often the issue is not the words but the state you were in: rushed, defensive, eager to please. Leadership communication coaching works on both, because one shapes the other.

We close by agreeing one message you will deliver differently before our next session, and how you will notice whether it landed. The following session starts with what actually happened, so the learning stays grounded in your real working week.

Communicating across languages and cultures in the Gulf

Many managers here lead in English while many of their team think in Arabic or another first language. Others communicate upwards in formal Arabic and sideways in English. Respect for seniority shapes how directly people will challenge you.

Because I coach in both Arabic and English, we can work on your communication in the language you will actually use. My background in HR across multinational organisations and government gives me a feel for how messages travel through a hierarchy.

Why an HR and talent background helps communication work

For more than 26 years I worked in leadership, HR and talent development across financial services, FMCG, entrepreneurship and government. Much of that work was about how messages travel through an organisation: how a restructuring is announced, how feedback is heard, how a strategy is understood three levels down.

I am an ICF PCC coach with more than 4,500 coaching hours and an NLP Master Practitioner. NLP is particularly useful for communication, because it helps you notice how language, framing and your own internal state shape what other people take away.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as presentation skills training?

No. Training teaches techniques to a group. Leadership communication coaching works one to one on how you think, frame and listen, including in everyday conversations where no slides are involved.

Can we prepare for a specific presentation next week?

Yes. A real deadline focuses the work. We prepare the event itself and also look at the habits it reveals, so the next presentation is easier.

I have been told I am too direct. Will coaching make me less authentic?

No. The aim is to keep your clarity while adjusting how it lands with different people. Directness is an asset when the listener can hear it.

Can we work on written communication, such as emails and board papers?

Yes. Written messages often cause more confusion than spoken ones, because nobody can ask a clarifying question. We look at structure, tone and what the reader needs to do next, using documents you are actually writing.

What if my communication problem is mainly with one senior stakeholder?

We can focus there. If influence across several senior people is the core issue, stakeholder management coaching may be the better frame for the work.

How is this different from executive presence coaching?

Communication coaching focuses on the message and the listening. Executive presence coaching focuses on how you hold yourself and are perceived in senior rooms. Many leaders work on both over time.

How many sessions does leadership communication coaching take?

Every engagement is personalised, so there is no fixed number. Sessions usually run weekly or every two weeks, online or in person in Manama, and we review progress regularly against the situations you wanted to handle differently.

Clear leaders are not born articulate. They learn what their listeners need.
