Executive Coaching for CFOs

Executive coaching for CFOs helps finance leaders move from being the most rigorous person in the room to being a leader who shapes the whole enterprise. We work on influence with the CEO and board, saying no without losing allies, presence beyond the numbers, and building a finance team that thinks for itself. I coach in person in Manama or online, in Arabic or English.

Finance leaders are usually promoted for being right. The CFO role asks for something more: being heard, being trusted with judgement as well as accuracy, and leading people who will never see the business the way you do.

The CFO role is no longer only about the numbers

A modern CFO is expected to be a strategic partner to the CEO, a steady voice for the board and audit committee, and the leader of a function that is changing fast. Technical excellence is the entry ticket. What decides how far you go is how well you lead beyond it.

Many finance leaders feel this as a tension. Your training rewards caution, precision and control. The enterprise role asks you to make calls with incomplete data, sell a point of view and let your team own work you could do faster yourself.

What finance leaders tend to bring into our sessions

  • Being seen as the department of no, and wanting to be seen as a partner without lowering standards.
  • A CEO who wants growth and an investment case you do not believe in.
  • Board or audit committee sessions where the questions feel like a cross-examination.
  • A transformation project, a new system or a restructuring that depends on people outside finance.
  • Strong analysts and controllers who are not ready to lead, and a gap where your successor should be.
  • Feedback that you are "too detailed" or "too cautious" for the next role, often without much explanation.

Saying no without becoming the person no one invites

Part of a CFO’s job is to say what others do not want to hear. Done well, it earns respect. Done in the wrong way, it closes doors, and people start building plans without you until it is too late to influence them.

In coaching we look at how you deliver the hard message: when you raise it, how you frame it, and whether people leave the conversation feeling blocked or helped. The aim is not to soften your judgement. It is to make sure your judgement arrives early enough, and clearly enough, to shape the decision. When the decision goes against your team, my guide on how to communicate a difficult decision helps with the next step. My guide on how to influence senior stakeholders gives you a practical framework for this.

Presence beyond the spreadsheet

Finance leaders often prepare more thoroughly than anyone else in the meeting and still feel unheard. The issue is usually not the content but the delivery: leading with method rather than conclusion, answering every question in full, or retreating into detail when challenged.

We practise starting with the point, holding a position under pressure and translating numbers into consequences that non-finance colleagues care about. When this becomes the main focus, executive presence coaching takes it further.

Building a finance team that can think, not only report

A CFO who is still the best analyst on the team has a capacity problem. Developing people who can interpret, challenge and advise frees you for the enterprise work, and it is the only way to build a credible successor.

We look at how you delegate, how you give feedback to detail-minded professionals, and how you respond when someone brings you work that is good but not how you would have done it. Small changes in those moments have a large effect on what your team becomes.

In our first session we start with one decision that did not go your way

After a free 30-minute discovery call, our first full session usually begins with a recent moment when your view did not carry: a proposal that went ahead over your objection, or a board discussion that went sideways. We look at what you said, when, and what you were telling yourself at the time.

From there we agree the two or three themes for the coming months and one specific meeting where you will try something different. Sessions usually run weekly or every two weeks around your reporting calendar, including quarter-end and audit cycles.

Why financial services is familiar ground

Financial services is one of the sectors where I spent my corporate career, working in HR and talent development. I developed leaders and shaped talent strategies in environments where regulation, risk and precision set the tone, so I understand why finance leaders are cautious and why that caution is valued.

I also know how finance leaders are seen from the other side of the table, when the conversation turns to who is ready for a wider role. I am an ICF Professional Certified Coach with more than 4,500 coaching hours. If you work in a bank, see also leadership coaching for banking leaders.

Frequently asked questions

I am a finance director, not yet a CFO. Is this coaching for me?

Yes. Many finance directors and heads of finance start coaching precisely because they want to be ready for the CFO role. The shift from technical leader to enterprise leader begins well before the title changes.

Do you need to understand finance to coach a CFO?

You bring the finance expertise. My role is to help you see how you lead, influence and decide. Having worked in financial services helps me follow the context quickly, but the coaching is about you, not the accounts.

Can coaching help with a tense relationship with my CEO?

Yes. The CEO and CFO relationship is one of the most important in any organisation, and one of the most strained. We look at your part in the pattern and what you could change, without me ever speaking to your CEO unless you ask.

What if my company is paying for my coaching?

The content of our sessions stays confidential. With a sponsor, we agree at the start what is shared, usually only broad goals and attendance, and nothing else leaves the room without your agreement.

Is there a version of this for my whole finance leadership team?

Yes. If the challenge sits across the team rather than with you alone, I can design a tailored team coaching programme that runs alongside or after your own coaching.

Accuracy got you here. Leadership takes you further.
