Burnout Coaching for Executives
Burnout coaching for executives helps senior leaders who feel exhausted, detached or stretched beyond capacity to change the patterns that got them there: how they work, decide, delegate, set boundaries and recover. It is coaching, not medical treatment. If your health is affected, see a doctor or licensed mental health professional first; coaching can sit alongside that care. I coach online or in person in Manama.

Executives rarely burn out because they are weak. More often it happens because they are capable, committed and used to absorbing whatever the role demands, until one day the reserves are gone.
Where coaching ends and medical care begins
I want to be clear about this before anything else. Coaching is not therapy and it is not medical treatment. I do not assess or manage health conditions. Coaching works with your performance, thinking habits and behaviour.
If you are struggling with your mental or physical health, please speak to a doctor or a licensed mental health professional. Coaching can run alongside that support, and many people find the two complement each other. My article on coaching vs therapy explains the difference in more detail.
- See a doctor first if you have persistent trouble sleeping, physical symptoms, or exhaustion that rest does not touch.
- Speak to a licensed mental health professional if you feel hopeless, persistently low or unable to cope day to day.
- If you ever feel unsafe or have thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a doctor immediately.
What burnout coaching for executives works on
Once you have the right health support in place, or if you are worn down but still functioning, coaching focuses on the leadership habits and beliefs that keep you overloaded.
| The pattern | How it shows up at senior level | What we work on |
|---|---|---|
| Over-responsibility | Carrying problems that belong to your team or peers | Delegation, trust and clear ownership |
| No boundaries | Always reachable, including evenings, weekends and holidays | Agreements with yourself, your team and your board |
| Worth tied to output | Rest feels like falling behind | The beliefs underneath your drive |
| Decision overload | Every question escalates to you | Decision rights and what only you should decide |
| Ignoring early signals | Pushing through until something gives | Noticing your own warning signs early |
Leaders often recognise the signs late
Many executives come to coaching after months of telling themselves they will rest after the next deadline, results season or restructuring. Common signs include cynicism about work you used to care about, irritability with your team, difficulty concentrating and a sense that nothing you do is enough.
My article on signs of burnout in leaders describes them in more detail. The burnout self-check for leaders can help you reflect, though it is not a medical assessment.
The executive context makes burnout harder to admit
At senior level, admitting exhaustion can feel risky. You may worry it will be read as weakness by your board, your shareholders or your team. In family-owned businesses, the line between work and family life can blur until there is no real off switch.
Gulf working life adds its own rhythms: long-distance travel across the region, multinational teams across time zones, and periods like Ramadan when working hours change and energy needs careful management. Coaching gives you a confidential place to look at all of this honestly.
A first session focuses on your energy, not your to-do list
We start by checking that you have any health support you need. Then we look at where your energy goes in a typical week: which activities, people and decisions drain you, and which restore you.
Rather than adding more tasks to your list, we agree one thing to stop, delegate or protect before we meet again. Sessions are usually weekly at first, then every two weeks, and the pace adapts to how you are.
We also talk about what recovery would actually look like for you. For some leaders that is protected evenings; for others it is a different structure for their leadership team or a conversation with the board about expectations.
The tools I bring to burnout work
As a certified Positive Intelligence® coach, I use mental fitness practices that help you notice stress-driven thinking and return to a calmer, clearer state, often in a few seconds at a time. Systemic coaching helps us see how your organisation and role contribute to the load, so the work is not only about personal resilience.
I bring more than 26 years of leadership and HR experience and more than 4,500 coaching hours as an ICF PCC coach. I have seen how organisations reward over-functioning, and how hard it is to step out of that pattern alone.
Frequently asked questions
Should I see a therapist or a coach for burnout?
If your health is affected, start with a doctor or licensed mental health professional. Coaching suits leaders who are well enough to work on how they lead and live, and it can run alongside clinical support. You can read more in can coaching help with burnout.
I am on sick leave. Can I start coaching now?
Please follow your doctor’s guidance first. Some people find coaching useful when preparing to return to work, once their health professional agrees it is appropriate.
Will my employer find out?
Not from me. Our sessions are confidential. If your employer sponsors the coaching, we agree in advance what is shared, which is normally the broad goals and nothing about what we discuss.
I cannot take time off. Can coaching help me keep going?
Coaching can help you change how you work so the load becomes sustainable. It is not a way to push through warning signs. If your body or mind is telling you to stop, please listen and get medical advice.
How is this different from stress management coaching?
Stress management coaching focuses on handling pressure day to day. Burnout coaching for executives addresses the deeper patterns in how a senior leader works when exhaustion has already built up.
Can we meet online if travel is part of the problem?
Yes. Sessions run online or in person in Manama, and we can choose whichever puts less strain on your week.
