What Is an ICF PCC Coach?
An ICF PCC coach holds the Professional Certified Coach credential from the International Coaching Federation, a global professional body for coaches. To earn it, a coach completes at least 125 hours of coach education and 500 hours of coaching experience, receives mentor coaching, passes a recorded performance evaluation and an exam, and commits to the ICF Code of Ethics. PCC is the middle of ICF's three individual credential levels.
Coaching is not a licensed profession in most countries, so anyone can call themselves a coach. A credential is one of the few independent signals you can check. Understanding what the ICF PCC credential actually measures helps you use it well when choosing a coach.
PCC stands for Professional Certified Coach, an ICF credential
The PCC is a credential awarded by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), an independent professional body that sets coaching standards, accredits coach training and credentials individual coaches worldwide.
ICF has three individual credential levels: Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and Master Certified Coach (MCC). They differ mainly in the amount of training and practice required and in the depth of coaching skill assessed. The full side-by-side view is in ACC vs PCC vs MCC.
ICF PCC requirements combine training, experience and assessed skill
The ICF PCC credential has five core requirements, set out on ICF's PCC credential page. At the time of writing, a coach needs:
- 125 or more hours of coaching education
- 500 or more hours of coaching experience, at least 450 of them paid
- 10 hours of mentor coaching
- A successful performance evaluation of real, recorded coaching
- A passing score on the ICF Credentialing Exam
A PCC credential tells you three useful things about a coach
When you see ICF PCC after a coach's name, you can reasonably conclude the following:
- Serious training. The coach has completed substantial coach-specific education, not just a weekend course.
- Real practice. Hundreds of hours with paying clients means they have coached a wide range of people and situations.
- Independent assessment. Their actual coaching has been recorded and evaluated against ICF's competencies, and they are bound by the ICF Code of Ethics, including its confidentiality standards.
A PCC credential does not tell you everything you need to choose a coach
A credential measures coaching skill and ethics. It does not tell you whether the coach understands your industry, your level of seniority or your culture, and it says nothing about chemistry, which matters a great deal.
That is why the credential is best used as a threshold rather than the deciding factor. Alongside it, look at the coach's leadership background, the kinds of clients they work with and how the discovery conversation feels. What qualifications should an executive coach have covers the wider checklist.
You can verify a coach's ICF credential yourself
ICF maintains a public directory of credentialed coaches on coachingfederation.org, where you can search by name. It is a quick, sensible check before you commit to any coach who lists an ICF credential.
You can also simply ask. A credentialed coach will be happy to tell you when they earned it, which training they completed and how they keep their skills current.
How the PCC credential shapes my own coaching
I am an ICF PCC coach, with 4,500+ coaching hours and certifications in executive coaching, systemic coaching, systemic team coaching, Positive Intelligence® mental fitness, NLP and leadership development. The credential shapes how I hold every session: the agreement, the confidentiality and the discipline of asking rather than telling.
You can read more about my credentials on the ICF PCC executive coach page, or see how they come together in one-to-one executive coaching.

Credentials and training →Frequently asked questions
Is a PCC coach better than an ACC coach?
A PCC coach has completed more training and many more coaching hours, and has been assessed at a deeper level of skill. That does not make every PCC coach the right fit for you, but it does indicate more experience.
Does an ICF PCC coach have to follow a code of ethics?
Yes. All ICF credential holders commit to the ICF Code of Ethics, which covers confidentiality, conflicts of interest, clear agreements and professional conduct. ICF also has a process for ethics complaints.
Is the PCC credential recognised in the Gulf?
ICF is a global body, and its credentials are familiar to many organisations across the GCC, including HR and learning teams that buy coaching. Some organisations ask for an ICF credential, or an equivalent, before they engage a coach.
Does PCC mean the coach specialises in executives?
No. PCC is a general coaching credential, not an executive coaching specialism. To judge executive coaching fit, look at the coach's leadership experience and the kinds of clients they work with alongside the credential.
Does an ICF PCC credential expire?
Yes, ICF credentials are not for life. Coaches renew them periodically by completing continuing coach education, including training in coaching ethics. ICF updates its requirements from time to time, so its own website is the authoritative source.
